Basement Home Office Reveal

See how a cluttered, unused space turned into a basement home office reveal that I love!

So before I can show you this fabulous reveal, I need to show you what this space looked like before. This area of our home, for the most part, was a storage area. Not really intended to be this, it just kinda happened. Things that were no longer needed or used some how made their way down to the basement. Am I proud of this? No way. Am I being real with ya? Absolutely!

So here’s what the future desk area looked like before we started the makeover.

Ugh, right? Actually what drove me most nuts about this room wasn’t all the stuff. I loathed it – don’t get me wrong. But what I really wanted to remove from this space was that dang corner shelf. The original owners installed that jewel. 🙂 And I think it was used for one of those tiny 13″ tv’s. You know, the TV/VCR combo that was popular in the 90’s? I had one in college. – oh yea.

Removing The Corner Shelf

But fast forward to 2020 and yes – this shelf had to go! So I got brave, got a hammer and well. See for yourself…

Chris and I removed the entire shelf. It was a such a great feeling to finally take it down! Then we ran to Home Depot and gathered some drywall, compound tape and some joint compound.

All that was left in repairing this wall was some tricky measuring/cutting. And before we knew it, the drywall was installed. Once that was up, we taped over the joints with the compound tape.

Then after a few layers of joint compound with sanding in between each coat, it was time to add some texture back to the wall. I sprayed a couple layers of this texture spray and then let it dry. And then it was time for me to paint all the basement walls.

You may remember from my Basement Office Family Room design board that I shared a few weeks back that my paint color for this room was going to be Repose Gray. So once I finished painting the complete room, it was time to build the IKEA desks.

Building of IKEA Desks

Now this was the part I was really looking forward to creating. I had researched (for months) different combinations of drawers, desk tops, desks – you name it!

I had two main goals I wanted to accomplish with these desks. One, the desks needed to be three-person, along one wall. And two, I wanted to hide all the computer CPU’s. Let’s face it – they ain’t pretty and all the cords that come with them gives me hives! 🙂

So after months of searching, calculating, measuring and thinking about it until my brain hurt….this is the combination I picked.

I purchased four Alex Drawer units and put them all together in one afternoon. Then I spaced them out as symmetrical as I could based off the window. Once I had them in place, I started my hack for inserting the CPU’s inside the drawer units.

The height of the boys CPU’s were taller than the bottom drawer alone, so I removed the bottom of the next drawer above. Then using some mending bars, I connected the two drawers into one solid unit.

Here’s a view from the front to help you see the hack with better detail. The great thing about this hack is even though I combined two drawers into one basically, you can’t tell at all when the drawers are closed!

To the back of the cabinets, I drilled a large hole to allow all the necessary cords to exit the drawer unit and reach the outlets. Now that the hack was complete, it was time to add my three Linnmon Tabletops on top of the drawer units. To secure them, I just screwed 1 1/2 screw from inside the top drawer underneath into the tabletop above.

The Home Office Reveal

Now all that was left to do was accessorize the room. I hung some wall shelves, added a couple lamps and then finally our new chairs arrived. And here’s what this room looks like now…

It’s was so dark down here when I was taking pictures, so I decided to show you a few images with the lamps on. Just for fun. 🙂
