DIY Decoupage Leaf Plate {Tutorial}

Hey there and happy Sunday to you!
When I shared my Autumn Inspired Shelves a few weeks ago,
some of you asked about my gold leaf plates.
So I thought today would be a perfect time to share the tutorial.

If you have never done a decoupage craft before I will explain.
Decoupage is basically a way of decorating an item
by gluing paper onto it with a special varnish.
Sounds simple enough right? It is. 🙂

My elegant fall project was completed in about 30 minutes
and it didn’t require many supplies.

Here is what you will need to complete this project:
-decoupage paper
-decoupage finish
-decoupage craft paint brushes
-two plates
-leaf pattern for tracing

With one quick trip to MichaeI’s, I found everything I needed.

I remembered I had two small plates that I had snagged
out of the clearance selection at Pier1 Imports a few weeks back.
I knew they would be the perfect size for my leaf pattern.

The first step was to place my wood craft leaf pattern onto
the back of the decoupage paper and trace the outline.

I used a pen to trace mine but I would recommend a pencil.
That way any trace lines that are left after the pattern
has been cut can easily be erased.

You probably have already guessed the next step…cutting.
While cutting, I tried to stay on the inside of the tracing lines.

Once I had the paper leaf cut out, it was time for applying the finish.
I brushed some on the center of my plate and on the back of the leaf.

I placed the leaf on the plate and then gently smoothed it down
to remove any air bubbles or creases.
I allowed that to dry for about 30 minutes and then applied a coat over the top of the leaf.
Once my plate was completely dry, it was time to add it to my shelves!

I love how the leaves add just the perfect amount of gold shine to my fall display.

Have you ever tried to decoupage before?
It can get a little sticky at times, but I think it’s so worth it!
