The sun is shining in and it looks so good! Come see how our new VELUX skylights have dramatically changed our small bathroom.
When we moved into this home over four years ago, I had a ton of design ideas for almost every room in the house. Except for our hall bathroom. Was it because I was completely in love with the current design? That would be a hard no. It had green walls, and a tired, worn out vanity. And it was dark – like so dark. Even though I knew someday, this small bathroom remodel would happen, it was far down on the to do list.
So when VELUX reached out and asked me to create a mood board for a space in my home in need of natural light, I was thrilled. A skylight is exactly what this tiny bathroom needed to get a new modern look. Now imagine my excitement when they loved my mood board so much, VELUX offered to send me a VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights and make my bathroom dream a reality!! (insert happy dance!)
Of course – I couldn’t say YES fast enough. So I then received a free in-home consultation to assess our skylight options. If you are in the northern Colorado area, I used VELUX 5-Star Skylight Specialist Heinsight Solutions in Fort Collins. Darren and his team were fabulous to work with! Choosing Our Skylight
After seeing all the skylight options, we finally decided on a VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylight with solar powered blinds. Did you catch all of that? There’s no leaking – awesome. It’s solar powered — so convenient! And it let’s in all the fresh air! What more could you want from a skylight?!
We love the addition of the white blinds as well. The option of making the bathroom darker at anytime was super important to us. Our skylight and blinds can be controlled two different ways: with the VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO smartphone app or a Velux remote control.
More on how the VELUX ACTIVE system automates my skylights later. First let’s talk about the installation process!
The whole installation only took two days. As soon as I saw the first hole cut in the ceiling, I began to freak out with joy and excitement!
But then when the actual skylight was completely installed, it was even more amazing! The whole room instantly felt ten times bigger.
Once the skylight was in, the next steps of this small bathroom remodel began. And it turned out better than my mood board. It’s better than I could have dreamed. So let me stop talking about it and instead let the before and after pictures speak for themselves.
The Small Bathroom Before
So here’s a picture of the bathroom before we installed the skylights. With no windows, this room was a pretty dark space.
For example, here’s a picture of how dark this bathroom was during the day with the lights off.
Now, let’s see the after and take in all that glorious sunshine, shall we?!
All of that beautiful light is coming from our new Velux skylight. Such a huge difference, right?! And I’m just getting started.
The Small Bathroom Now
Even though it’s the same size, it doesn’t seem small any more. 😉 The skylight has given this tiny bathroom the feeling of a cathedral ceiling.
Every view of this bathroom is so much better, including this view of the new vanity, mirror and bathroom sconce.
And I got a surprise for you! Not only did I wallpaper this small accent wall, I also did the back of the door. Love how this turned out!
In this bathroom, which didn’t have any windows, the skylight was the only way we could bring in daylight and fresh air into this space. And that gorgeous natural light from above is what provides a beautifully balanced light throughout the whole room. This natural light was key for the whole bathroom remodel. It helps all the colors in the room appear true, crisper, cleaner!
The natural light from the skylight simply enhances everything it touches! From the marble shower tile to the black hexagon floor and everything in between. Such an unbelievable change from how this bathroom started out.
The VELUX ACTIVE system allows me to automate the skylight to automatically open and close to bring in fresh air or adjust the blinds for light control. There’s a sensor in my bathroom that monitors humidity, temperature and CO2 levels.
The System is also connected to an online weather station, so it compares the outside conditions with the inside conditions and opens the skylight if bringing in fresh air will improve the humidity, CO2 and temperature levels. Exactly what a bathroom needs! I can also control it from anywhere with my smartphone app — even from California. Yep! The whole time we were on vacation I knew when our skylight was open or closed. How cool is that?!
A big thank you for following along on the small bathroom makeover journey. I will be sharing all the product sources for our bathroom in another post coming tomorrow.
If you have a dark room in your house that needs a bright new look, definitely consider a skylight from VELUX. We are so happy that we did!
